By contrast, the upper floor is an authentic ancient Huế wooden house, restored as a honeymoon hideaway and peopled with carved wooden birds, as the land’s tradition wants.

An ancient Huế wooden house, dismantled and re-fitted on the upper floor. Wood throughout: a finely carved royal cage-bed, a copper bathtub, and a surrounding balcony with furniture carved to match the bed.

A double “lovers’” shower, a recreated early-twentieth-century double lavabo in lim wood and Nghệ An marble, and a carved walk-through wardrobe: everything shared, while each keeps a side of their own.

The house’s theme in one room: the joyful exuberance of Indochina and the disciplined elegance of classical antiquity. A large glass screen, hand-painted by Nguyễn Niên’s workshop, separates bedroom and bathroom while keeping the space open.

Chim Basalt

Volcanic stone among the foliage

Laid out like its twin, with a bathroom partly separated by a painted glass partition and its own patio. Indochinese baroque decoration by Nguyễn Niên and his workshop, set against raw basalt from the high plateaus west of Huế.

Bathtub and lavabo are carved from the dark stone; the bathroom opens to the patio through a great arch, and the bathtub itself stands outdoors among tropical plants.
